Not content with merely scaring you with zombies, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman is going to terrify readers with an even more insidious supernatural beastie: demons. The first issue of his new comic Outcast hit shelves yesterday and is already started to giving people nightmares.
Brian Michael Bendis' Powers Coming To PlayStation As Series?
Outcast follows Kyle Barnes, a man who has been surrounded by demonic possession his entire life. It plagues him, stalks him, takes everything he loves away from him. Now, finally, he intends to do something about it. Drawn by Paul Azaceta and colored by Elizabeth Breitweister, the comic is sure to get under people's skin as Kyle navigates the peculiar world of Baptist exorcisms.
Demonic possession hits home to Kirkman, who grew up in rural Virginia and like Kyle's character, was surrounded by all manner of fire and brimstone, heaven, hell, angels and demons. It may be his most personal work yet, a far more intimate story than the horror ride he's taken readers on in The Walking Dead over the years.
Blue Estate, Rail Shooter Based On Comic, Launches On PSN
"That makes demonic possession that much more terrifying of a situation," the writer tells USA Today, as he still manages to scare himself after all these years. "It's ending up being a lot creepier than I thought was possible in a static image in silence on a comic-book page."
Since his name is Robert Kirkman, and the show he executive produces is the highest rated program on cable, of course networks are eager to scoop up anything he writes in the hopes that lightning will strike twice. Outcast has already been optioned by Cinemax (home of Banshee and Strike Back, a glorious adaptation in its own right). No word on its greenlight status, but it's safe to assume that it's all systems go for Outcast.
Outcast is distributed by Image Comics/Skybound Entertainment. The double-sized first issue retails for $2.99 and you can get it right here.
