All good things must come to an end. Bad things, too. Whatever your opinion is on Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil flicks, the next one will be the director's last tale in Capcom's world of zombies run amok.
New Resident Evil Movie Confirmed By Paul W.S. Anderson To Be In 3D
Revealed back in April, Anderson recently told Collider that the sixth film will be his last take on Resident Evil, referencing the film's working title. When asked if the next movie was the final installment, Anderson responded, "That's what's on the title page, it's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, so absolutely."
While "The Final Chapter" may be just that for Anderson and RE, that doesn't guarantee it'll be the last RE movie ever. Even Anderson himself quipped, "As Christopher Lambert famously said, 'There can be only one.' And then there were five of them."
Rumors Claim Resident Evil 7 Will See Return of Wesker, Have Films' Alice as Playable Character
Bottom line? If it's bankable, you can count on more movies to come, whether Anderson is involved or not, and the Resident Evil movies are most certainly profitable.
As Collider reports, "after the release of the first film in 2002, the following three sequels each grossed more than their predecessor, topping out at nearly $300 million for Resident Evil: Afterlife. Though the last installment, Residence Evil: Retribution, fell about $50 million short of Afterlife, it still raked in an impressive $240 million worldwide."
Though without her hubbie to direct, I can't imagine Milla Jovovich will keep reprising her role as Alice. Jovovich had previously stated she's not keen on doing another Resident Evil flick. But based on what little has been revealed about the next movie, another character could take over for Alice.
When Final Chapter, known at the time as Resident Evil: Rising was first revealed, the only solid info we had was that the movie would feature Li Bingbing as Ada Wong. That was it, no mention of any other characters.
Anderson is still writing the script, and with the shooting schedule set, it's anyone's guess when exactly the movie will premiere.
If you go by the ending of Retribution it will have Ada, a re-powered Alice, Leon, Jill, and Alice's "daughter" Becky, alongside an inexplicably alive and now U.S. President Albert Wesker as they make their final stand against a world completely overrun with T-virus creatures.
