'The Evil Within' Images Put You Face To Face With Your Worst Nightmares, E3 Demo Announced

Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami is stripping down the action and ratcheting up the horror with his new game The Evil Within, and he's making a good case to be very afraid, if the several new screenshots just released are any indication.

Whispering Willows Steam and OUYA Game Brings Horror To 2D

"While investigating the scene of a gruesome mass murder, Detective Sebastian Castellanos and his partners encounter a mysterious and powerful force. After seeing the slaughter of fellow officers, Sebastian is ambushed and knocked unconscious. When he awakens, he finds himself in a deranged world where hideous creatures wander among the dead. Facing unimaginable terror, and fighting for survival, Sebastian embarks on a frightening journey to unravel what's behind this evil force." See, this is why I never became a cop, because cops are the one's who end up dealing with this supernatural crap over and over again.

The Resident Evil games took a turn for the action-horror at the fourth installment and never looked back, despite diminishing returns on each subsequent release. Mikami wanted to put his focus back on the 'survival' in 'survival horror'. He aims to put the fear of god back into people who have grown accustomed to the tropes and manners of the genre. Low ammo, scarce resources and nightmarish creatures will populate the world of The Evil Within and bring to the surface that old, animal feeling: fear.

On the latter, we can definitely say that Mikami has reached, if not exceeded his goal. These are some gruesome, unnerving shots of the game.

A key feature that piques my interest is the shifting nature of reality in the game. Nothing is permanent, the walls can shift and alter, corridors can appear and disappear. Now, not even a dark corner is safe from the monsters that stalk you. They can appear any time, any where. Even the world itself is against you.

GameNGuide will get its hands on the demo at E3, so stay tuned to us next week during the year's biggest gaming convention for our impressions on The Evil Within and many more titles.

The Evil Within launches on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PC on October 21 this year. It's turning into a light autumn, people, so you'll need something. You can pre-order the horror here.
