Rockstar Games recently released a surprise update that removed user-generated content features from "Red Dead Redemption 2," sparking player backlash.
The developer has removed the option for players to view certain types of content for the game's "Red Dead Online" mode. The studio is still doing basic maintenance and simple changes to "Red Dead Redemption 2," even if it has not released any major content in years.
Surprise Red Dead Redemption 2 Update
The controversial update was first spotted by community member PLTytus, where Rockstar Games shared a new article that announced the removals. These started on Dec. 12, 2024, and resulted in various types of content that players created no longer being available on the Red Dead Online Social Feed.
The post also went on to list all of the content that would no longer be showing up on the Red Dead Online Social Feed. On top of posts related to user-generated content, you will no longer see friend activity, crew activity, story mode accomplishments, challenges, milestones, and more, according to Rockstar Intel.

The update does not remove Rockstar Game posts and notifications, which will still be visible to players on the feed. No reasoning was given as to why the developer decided to make this particular change to "Red Dead Redemption 2."
It also comes as a worrisome update for fans of "Red Dead Online," but some are hoping that it relates more to a technical issue. Fans are hoping that it will not be a foreshadowing of how the studio will be handling "Red Dead Online" moving forward.
Removal of User-Generated Content Features
One user said on social media that it was a crazy move to suddenly drop an update like this that removed user-generated content. They also argued that "Red Dead Redemption 2" sold a lot of copies, which means that there were still a lot of things the developer could do with it, Gaming Bible said.
Another person reasoned that the controversial update could mean that Rockstar Games is taking those assets for "Grand Theft Auto VI Online" instead. They think that it also means the studio will not go back to "Red Dead Online" after the release of "GTA VI."
The fact that the latest entry in the "GTA" franchise is just around the corner means that Rockstar Games' other titles could lose out on support as it focuses on the more popular game. Fans of "Red Dead Redemption 2" can still hope that there will be a port for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S at some point, according to Comic Book.
