Chinese video game giant Tencent has acquired a majority stake in Kuro Games, the developer of the open-world RPG Wuthering Waves.

Wuthering Waves suffered from a troubled launch when it came out to PC and mobile earlier this year. But since then, the game has really improved and fan sentiment is currently at an all-time high.

Tencent's Majority Stake in Kuro Games

A PlayStation 5 release for the open-world RPG is currently planned for Jan. 2, 2025, to reach a wider audience. This also comes as Wuthering Waves' major version 2.0 update gets closer to release.

Tencent seems to realize Kuro Games and its project's potential as it has acquired a controlling stake in the studio. This comes as the Chinese company recently invested in the developer previously. The latest development sees Tencent buying 37% of the firm's shares from Hero Entertainment.

Kuro Games executives released an internal memo saying that Tencent will still remain hands-off despite its majority stake. It added that its strategy of independent operations will still be intact, according to Push Square.

The developer believes that this would eventually lead to a much more stable external environment to enable it to focus on other areas. The development doesn't come as much of a surprise.

This is because Wuthering Waves looks like it plans to stay to compete with other open-world RPGs available in the market right now. One of the more popular titles in the genre is miHoYo's Genshin Impact.

Wuthering Waves' Potential

Tencent has quickly become one of the largest media conglomerates in China and has extended its reach to many high-profile games and developers. It is also responsible for publishing a ton of titles made by different studios, Game Rant said.

It is also known for purchasing shares of foreign developers, and it already has major interests in studios such as Riot Games and Epic Games. Tencent also previously bought Supercell in 2016, which is the one behind Clash of Clans.

The PlayStation 5 launch of Wuthering Waves includes a variety of bonuses that players can expect to receive. Pre-orders are now open for the Awakening Bundle which gives you a ton of freebies, such as 500,000 Shell Credits and various bonus items.

The game has a ton of different and unique characters that players can encounter that each play a role in the immersive story. Playable characters also have a variety of powers that can be unleashed against challenging enemies, according to Gematsu.
