Revenge of the Savage Planet Comes Years After Google Shut Down Original Developer

Revenge of the Savage Planet is a sort of sequel to Journey to the Savage Planet and comes years after Google shut down the IPs original developer, Typhoon Studios.

Co-founder and studio head of Racoon Logic, Reid Schneider, said that it took longer to buy back the Journey to the Savage Planet IP and source code from Google than it did to sell Typhoon Studios to it. He said that this was because the company was used to buying stuff but not giving it back.

Schneider and other Racoon Logic employees also said that Google was not used to a lot of how game development worked in general.

Co-founder and creative director Alex Hutchinson said that the core of it was that you should not work with companies whose primary business is not making games, according to Eurogamer.

The reason why Racoon Studios knows a lot about working with Google is that it was co-founded by, and hired, many employees who previously worked at Typhoon Studios. Hutchinson also said that the first, last, and only game that Google ever paid for internally was Journey to the Savage Planet.

Typhoon Studios was founded in 2017 by a small team of former triple-AAA developers who had years worth of experience working on highly popular franchises. These include Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Watch Dogs, The Sims, and Batman: Arkham.

In 2019, Google acquired Typhoon Studios and placed it under their Stadia Games and Entertainment division. But two years later, on Feb. 1, 2021, the studio was shut down on the day of the release of Journey to the Savage Planet.

A Whole New Adventure

But the new game, Revenge of the Savage Planet, takes players to a completely new planet where they are all alone. However, they have been given a message from their intergalactic HR department that tells them they were laid off two decades into their century-long nap, said GamesRadar.

During a hands-off preview of Revenge of the Savage Planet, Racoon Studios showed off some gameplay that fans can expect to see in the sort of sequel.

The game aims to build upon how Journey to the Savage Planet drew positive comparisons to the simpler, shorter, and more colorful games of the PlayStation 2 era.

The sequel now swaps out the original game's first-person perspective for a third-person camera view that is set far enough from the character to make clear what fans already know. This is because the game channels the same energy as titles like Banjo-Kazooie, according to The Gamer.
