Humble Games Shake-up Disrupts Game Ports
The recent restructuring at Humble Games is creating significant challenges for video game developers focused on updating their games on various console platforms.
Developers are finding it particularly tough to manage game ports, a direct consequence of the layoffs and operational shifts announced last week.
Squid Shock Games, the creator behind the popular title Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus, has been hit hard. They expressed that the restructuring caught them off guard, making it difficult to update their game on consoles like the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation.
Similarly, Starway Games, known for the life simulation game Coral Island, also faces hurdles. They are unable to provide the necessary updates and hotfixes to console versions of their games, as they only have backend access for Steam, a platform for PC games.
Developers Face New Update Challenges
Polygon reported that the shake-up has left more than four game studios unclear about the process of updating their games on console platforms.
The restructuring involved Humble Games handing over its operations to The Powell Group, which has been tasked with managing the game catalog and fulfilling existing contracts.
In the midst of these challenges, some developers are taking independent action to ensure continuity.
For example, Squid Shock Games has started planning to launch a Patreon to support their efforts in updating game ports. Meanwhile, other developers are reaching out to legal advisors to explore their options.
