Ed Boon, the chief developer of NetherRealm Studios, which is responsible for Mortal Kombat 1, talked about the fighting game's Year 2 plans.

He confirmed that the highly popular game is set for some big balance changes and also revealed a new look at the upcoming DLC character, Takeda. This was made in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter and Boon added that he will be playable at the upcoming Evo fighting game tournament.

The event itself will be held during the weekend of July 19, 2024, and the published video on social media showed Takeda's pre-fight interaction with Smoke. Players can see the upcoming character alongside, who is known as one of the Kombat Kids, equipped with his trademark bladed whips.

Takeda will be the last of the Kombat Pack 1 DLC characters and is set to release later this month alongside the final Kameo character, Ferra. Additionally, dataminers have discovered evidence that suggests the next six DLC characters that could grace Mortal Kombat 1's roster, according to IGN.

Boon also posted a series of separate tweets where he said that the Takeda build for Evo would include upcoming bug fixes as well as a balance patch. The latter is said to introduce "significant improvements" to several characters in the fighting game.

For example, Nitara is set to receive some "serious" buffs that would make her a more formidable fighter for players to use. The NetherRealms Studios chief developer also said that fan polls revealed the top five characters that players hope will get some much-needed balance changes.

On the other hand, Mortal Kombat 1 fans are also hoping for new Kameo characters to come to the fighting game. Many are looking forward to Kombat Pack 2 and want it to include another set of new DLC characters that will freshen up their gaming experiences.

The studio also confirmed that Mortal Kombat 1 will have a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con that will be held on Friday, July 26, 2024. Many people are expecting that time to be used to reveal the long-rumored Kombat Pack 2, said GameRant.

Rumored Kombat Pack 2

The first Kombat Pack for the game included Ermac, Homelander, Omni-Man, Peacemaker, and Quan Chi, with Takeda coming soon. On top of Boon's tweet, the official Mortal Kombat 1 X account also posted, "What lies beyond the horizon" Join us at #SDCC2024 to see what the future holds for #MK1."

Despite all of the teases and confirmations, fans of Mortal Kombat 1 still don't know exactly what NetherRealm Studios has in store for the fighting game beyond its first year of DLC. When the studio initially revealed the entire Kombat Pack 1 roster, it showed the characters briefly at the same time.

This is something that the studio could do again for Kombat Pack 2 if it does get announced at SDCC 2024.

Other than these speculations, Boon also confirmed back in December 2023 that the fighting game will get a DLC story mode expansion similar to what was seen in Mortal Kombat 11's transition into Aftermath, according to EventHubs.
