Overwatch 2 Teases New Hero Space Ranger With Crash-Landed Escape Pod

Overwatch 2 Teases New Hero Space Ranger With Crash-Landed Escape Pod

Overwatch 2 developer Blizzard just teased the team-based shooter's upcoming hero, codename Space Ranger, with an empty escape pod that seemingly crash-landed on Earth and is now visible in one of the game's maps.

The new hero is expected to be released in the game's next season and the latest tease comes after the new Transformers crossover launched earlier this week. The escape pod that players see in Dorado features some clues regarding the identity of Space Ranger.

Blizzard first teased the new hero at last year's Blizzcon and the latest new information included a photograph that was taped to the inside of the escape pod. It hinted that the new character may be an old colleague of another hero, Mei, or at least someone who knows Mei.

After players discovered the crash site of the escape pod, they immediately went to work to decode the message that was included. It read "J has landed. Attempting transmission to RPT. Awaiting response," according to Polygon.

Many people are speculating that the J mentioned in the message is referring to a character named Jiayi, who is referenced in one of Mei's voice lines in Overwatch 2. The latter will sometimes say on the Lijiang Tower map, "My friend Jiayi works here. She and I had a lot of fun in grad school. Maybe too much."

That map in particular is known for being the headquarters for Lucheng Interstellar, which is a Chinese company that was responsible for building the Horizon Lunar Colony. The latter is where Winston and Hammond come from when it comes to Overwatch lore.

Furthermore, it appears that Lucheng Interstellar may have been involved in developing a Martian colony as two parachutes connected to the escape pod found in Dorado bear the company's logo and the words "Project Red Promise."

On top of the message, players also reported seeing a familiar error window during their matches at times.

The popup indicates that there are some hero customizations that are currently unavailable and people have argued that this is something that only appeared shortly before the early trials for Mauga and Venture in Overwatch 2, said GameRant.

All We Know So Far

Based on the in-game interface, Overwatch 2's Season 12 is set to start on Aug. 20, 2024. Some fans also noted that the early playtests for both Mauga and Venture lasted about a month each before they came out to the game itself.

Many people are also expecting to learn more about the upcoming hero in the next couple of weeks as Blizzard reveals more information about Space Ranger. But for now, players will have to settle with the content that is currently available in Overwatch 2.

The latest Transformers crossover includes in-game tasks and there are also Summer Games events that let you earn icons, nameplates, titles, and sprays, as well as a bunch of Battle Pass experiences that will help you prepare for the game's next season, according to MSN.

Space Ranger is known to come from a colony on Mars and Blizzard described her as a "highly mobile support hero who has quite a bit of vertical mobility." The developer also said that she will be armed with a burst-fire smart submachine gun and retractable shoulder-mounted missile launchers.
