Sonic X Shadow Generations: Sega Teases New Playable Character

Sonic X Shadow Generations: Sega Teases New Playable Character

Sega is teasing a new playable character for the upcoming Sonic X Shadow Generations, a remaster of the original Sonic Generations released in 2011.

The original game featured two playable characters, Classic Sonic, and Modern Sonic, and the remaster will include an exclusive side story where Shadow the Hedgehog will be playable as well.

The official website for Sonic X Shadow Generations was launched in Japan and one portion features the playable characters from the Sonic section. The other focuses on the Shadow section.

What is worth noting is that the Shadow section has a place for a second playable character where the screen is gray and the language underneath simply reads, "Coming Soon." For now, it is difficult to guess who the second playable character will be for the Shadow section of the game.

The black-head hedgehog does not have a "Classic" version so to speak and the character did not debut until Sonic Adventure 2 on Dreamcast which is considered the "Modern" era.

Sega also went out of its way to come up with a workaround for Sonic Superstars by adding a skin for Sonic based on Shadow, according to ComicBook.

It is also entirely possible that the studio has relented and created a Classic version of Shadow for use in the upcoming remaster and in future 2D games. However, there is no way to know for sure until Sega reveals the character itself as it could be an entirely new individual.

Another possibility is that the teased character is Rogue the Bat, who made her debut alongside Shadow in Sonic Adventure 2. She found herself allied with the black hedgehog in that particular title as well as in Sonic Heroes.

There are a lot of Sonic fans who would be ecstatic to see Rogue made a playable character as she has become a major player in the franchise over the last two decades.

But whoever the unknown character is, fans may not have to wait long before Sega reveals their identity as the game will be released on Oct. 25, 2024.

Releasing Later This Year

Based on various screenshots for Sonic X Shadows Generations, Metal Sonic will be included in the game but it is unknown if the character will be playable.

When the game launches later this year, it will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC, said Insider Gaming.

Head of Sonic Team Takashi Iizuka also talked about the remaster, saying that when they thought up the concept for the Shadow the Hedgehog game, they came up with an action-shooter. This was because, at the time, this genre was what was popular among players.

He added that since Shadow is an anti-hero character who would use anything at his disposal to get the job done, they had him use a gun so that they could incorporate that action-shooting "gameplay."

However, he noted that for Sonic X Shadow Generations, they wanted all the levels to make the most of the black hedgehog's iconic move, Chaos Control. This lets him stop time and you will be able to use it to find new ways of attacking enemies, according to Eurogamer.
