Concerns Over Online Harassment

Guillemot expressed dismay over the rising incidents of online harassment within the gaming industry. He stressed his current concern: "I am troubled by the malicious and personal online attacks targeting some of our team members and partners." He called on both the industry and players to unequivocally condemn such behavior.

The remarks come amidst controversy surrounding Assassin's Creed Shadows, particularly criticisms aimed at its male protagonist, inspired by the historical Black samurai Yasuke. The game has been drawn into broader debates on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in gaming, which have faced backlash on social media platforms.

Guillemot reaffirmed Ubisoft's stance, stating, "We, at Ubisoft, condemn these hateful acts in the strongest possible terms." The International Game Developers Association (IDGA) had previously condemned similar campaigns targeting DEI initiatives in March.

Looking Ahead in the Gaming Industry

Discussing future prospects, Guillemot highlighted technological advancements as a source of excitement. He commented that accelerating adoption and mastery of technological advances such as generative AI and cloud computing would significantly enhance their ability to innovate and deliver exceptional gaming experiences.

Assassin's Creed Shadows is scheduled for release on November 12 for Ubisoft+ Premium subscribers and purchasers of the Gold or Ultimate Editions, with a broader release on November 15.
