Atari 50th Anniversary Collection to Add Nearly 40 New Games

Atari is expanding its 50th anniversary collection with some new additions that would include nearly 40 new games to expand its already massive roster of titles.

The brand-new expansion was announced by both Atar and Digital Eclipse and is known as Atari 50: the Anniversary Celebration Expanded Edition. It is a new version of the game that will add two timelines, along with 39 games, to the playable Atari retrospective.

There is also an official release date set for the Expanded Edition, Octo. 25, 2024, for PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and for the Atari VCS.

What we know for now is that the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 versions of the Expanded Edition will also get physical editions. This will more specifically include a steelbook for the Nintendo handheld console.

This is on top of the Nintendo Switch getting several goodies already, including Atari 2600 art cards, miniature arcade marquee signs, and an AI Alcorn Replica Syzygy Co. business card.

The standard version will also be sold for $39.99 and the steelbook version will be sold for $49.99, according to TechRadar.

On the other hand, the two new timelines and games will be offered to people who already own the original Atari 50 via downloadable content later this year. The Wider World of Atari timeline will feature 19 playable games and eight video segments.

This one takes a series of deep dives into stories from across Atari history and shows how Atari continued to influence creators and fans over the past few decades. Additionally, it features new interviews, vintage ads, historical artifacts, and many more.

On the other hand, The First Console War timeline will have 20 playable games and six video segments. It will tell the story of the first major console war that happened in the gaming industry between the Atari 2600 and Mattel's Intellivision.

Two New Timelines

The addition of the 39 new games in the anniversary edition brings the total number of titles available in the collection to nearly 130. All of these games have been derived from multiple home and portable consoles, said Engadget.

These timelines are basically interactive history lessons about the company itself that include video segments and playable games. The Wider World of Atari timeline includes the classic arcade cabinet Berzerk, Pong creator Al Alcorn, and artist Evelyn Seto who designed the company's iconic logo.

The update of the new collection will roll out this fall and will become the definitive version after it arrives. The First Console War timeline will also feature interviews from former Intellivision game director Don Daglow, Activision's David Crane and Garry Kitchen, and more, according to GameInformer.

The original Atari 50: the Anniversary Collection was released in 2022 and was made by developer Digital Eclipse.

It initially launched with 103 games from Atari's history and received 12 more titles in December 2023. But now, with the Expanded Edition version, the total number of titles included will be at a staggering 154.
