Danganronpa Devs Working on New RPG Featuring Tactical Gameplay, Relationships

The original developers of the Danganronpa series are working on an entirely new game that will be published by Sony subsidiary Aniplex and is known as The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy.

The upcoming title will not be released for PlayStation 5 users at launch but there is a chance that it will be ported at a later date. The team is currently prioritizing bringing the RPG to Nintendo Switch and PC first.

The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is described as a strategy game where players will assume the role of teenage protagonist Takumi Sumino. The individual lives in the always-safe Tokyo Residential Complex.

However, monsters soon wreak havoc on the town on one faithful day and Takumi is then recruited into the Last Defense Academy. This is where he has been tasked with keeping the school safe alongside 14 other students for 100 days.

On top of offering tactical gameplay mechanics, players will also have to strengthen their bonds or relationships with their allies. Supposedly, the game will have up to 100 different endings depending on the decisions that you make along your journey, according to Push Square.

The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy was unveiled during the Nintendo Direct presentation and now has a Steam page set up. The first footage of the upcoming title shows that it seems to be a mash-up of visual novel and Fire Emblem-y RPG battles that take place on grids.

The promise of letting you deepen your bonds with your allies came with the revelation that you can craft gifts and give them to them to make the process go faster. Some have already speculated that the relationships you have will somewhat provide benefits during battle when both characters are present.

Footage of the battles also showed turn-based fights where you can line up abilities on a grid to strike against waves of demons pouring forth. The demons in the game range from cute little orbs to levitating dragons that you can hit with a motorbike, as seen in the trailer.

Coming in Early 2025

Some players are hoping that they will be able to deepen bonds with the motorbike person and develop greater motorbike affinity, which is something that fits well in the Persona universe.

This could then lead to the ability to expand the motorbike with a sidecar for more area-of-effect damage, said Rock Paper Shotgun.

So far, details about The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy are pretty scarce and there is not much information on what it could include. What we do know is that the game is set to release in early 2025 and can now be wishlisted on Valve's gaming platform.

The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is a collaboration between Danganronpa writer Kazutaka Kodaka and Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi. The former is the writer and director of the new game.

In a recent interview, Kodaka said that the development process for the latest RPG started roughly six years ago after Too Kyoo Games was founded. It was meant to be published by another company but was ultimately scrapped before heading to Aniplex, according to GamesRadar.
