TimeSplitters Rating in Taiwan Suggests Classic Shooter Could Come With PS Plus

TimeSplitters Rating in Taiwan Suggests Classic Shooter Could Come With PS Plus

TimeSplitters just got a rating in Taiwan that suggests the classic PlayStation 2 shooter could soon be playable on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 through the PlayStation Plus subscription.

It was discovered that there are two versions of the game that were listed on the Taiwanese ratings board website for both modern consoles. The associated company that was listed alongside the new rating for the game is Koch Media, which has now been renamed to Plaion.

The development comes as a new game in the TimeSplitters series was canceled last year and studio Free Radical Design was forced to shut down. This led credence to the assumption that the Taiwan rating was most likely for the original PlayStation 2 version of the game.

This also suggests that the classic shooter could be coming to the PS Plus catalog in the future despite no dates being included in the listing.

TimeSplitters was originally released in 2000 alongside the launch of the PlayStation 2 console. It was then followed by two sequels released in 2002 and 2005, according to Eurogamer.

The development also comes hot on the heels of the release of several PlayStation 2 games, including Tomb Raider Legend, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5.

TimeSplitters' story takes place across multiple different time periods with 18 different characters fighting off against the titular foe. These are creatures who can travel through time and wreck history using special crystals at their disposal.

Publisher Deep Silver was the one that announced in 2021 the return of TimeSplitters alongside key original members of Free Radical Design. These included founders Steve Ellis and David Doak, said IGN.

Prior to the game's cancellation, gameplay footage managed to get out that showed its similarities to battle royale Fortnite. The Taiwanese Ratings Board where TimeSplitters was recently seen also leaked other games for PS Plus Premium.

PS Plus Subscription Games

The original TimeSplitters game, while not as popular as its sequel, had a lot going for it that players enjoyed. These include multiplayer modes that feature a ton of variety, bots that are fun to play with, and a story mode that can be tackled by two players.

While the game will most likely feel a little bit dated compared to other games that you can play on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 today, fans of the original will surely be excited with the potential release of the title on modern consoles, particularly with the game's classic stop-and-aim shooting mechanics.

TimeSplitters potentially coming to modern consoles comes as the free games lineup for PlayStation Plus subscribers this July is off to a controversial start. This is primarily because some tiles for the top two tiers will come and go on rotation.

This is unlike people who subscribe to the basic PS Plus Essential tier, who can keep the games as long as they are stored in the library. The drawback to this is that they can only have three games per month as opposed to the top two tiers' massive lineup, according to GamingBible.
