Ubisoft has finally confirmed a release window for the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake, which is 2026, following several delays to the game.

On top of the delays, the development studio also changed from Ubisoft Prune to Ubisoft Montreal. With all of these factors, fans have been eagerly waiting for some updated news for the remake.

The developers also shared a brief visual teaser of the game that showed off a candle being relit after time rewinds. Other than these, however, the studio has not revealed anything new about the upcoming title.

Ubisoft had originally planned to release the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake back in 2021, but this has been delayed by several years. A developer Q&A and FAQ in Spring 2023 shared that the game was at the "conception phase."

The developers later assured fans of the franchise that the remake was "very much alive" but only in an "early stage of development." The original game was first released in 2003 and was available on Game Boy Advance, GameCube, PlayStation 2, PC, and Xbox, according to Polygon.

Prior to the latest announcement of the release window, Ubisoft said in November last year that the Ubisoft Montreal project had passed an "important" internal milestone. It also added that development on the game was "progressing."

The first delay to the upcoming remake was in December 2020, which was just a few months after the game was announced. Later in February 2021, the project was infinitely delayed and the shift in developer was made in May 2022.

The highly anticipated remake of the popular game has now been in development for roughly four years. Ubisoft said in a blog post that the remake is now entering the "full production phase" and that Ubisoft Montreal was getting support from co-dev studios in Toronto, Bucharest, Paris, and Pune, said IGN.

Getting a 2026 Release Window

The situation comes as one of two games in the Prince of Persia franchise released this year is getting its first story DLC. The game in question is Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and the DLC is The Mask of Darkness which is coming in September later this year.

During the latest Ubisoft Forward, the studio shared a trailer that focused on streamers reacting to the base game and on free updates that have already been released for the game. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a beautiful metroidvania that has tricky combat and a move set that develops slowly over the course of your adventure.

On top of these, the game offers some great puzzles and platforming challenges to test out players' skills. Many fans are probably excited about the announcement of the new DLC as it will include some new content for them to enjoy.

This is also because the Mask of Darkness is a proper story DLC and not just a whole set of new challenges that can be over and done within the blink of an eye, according to Rock Paper Shotgun.
