A Dragon Quest fan remake that has been 11 years in the making finally becomes available to download for free and features six to eight hours of new content.
The remake, known as Dragon Quest +, is a new version of the first game in the Dragon Quest franchise. It features remixed monsters, new armor, weapons, items, an orchestrated soundtrack, new dungeons and mini-dungeons, three new mini-games, and other quality-of-life improvements.
Fan-Made Dragon Quest Remake
While the fan-made remake has actually been out for a few months now, the most recent version, 1.07, is a lot more refined than the initial release. This makes it the perfect chance for fans of the franchise or even newcomers to dive into the world of Dragon Quest.
The game is neatly packaged inside a clean and completely free download from the Dragon's Den fan site. However, it is also worth noting that there are separate clients for AMD and Nvidia GPUs, according to GamesRadar.
What's worth noting with Dragon Quest + is that it is a full-on remake and not a remaster although it does look like it recycles some assets from various games in the series.
The intro, for example, is a take on the beginning of Dragon Quest 3 where players start the game in a dream world and answer questions that determine stat growth throughout the game.
The new content that the fan-made remake brings is made up of a bonus dungeon that was inspired by Dragon Quest Monsters. There is also a brand new bonus world that was inspired by Dragon Quest Monsters 2 and the new mini dungeons are set in Alefgard.

The Dragon Quest remake comes as many fans are eagerly waiting for the release of the Dragon Quest 3 H2-2D remake. The remake was made by NightFly Studio and was a passion project that features great attention to detail.
The fan-made remake also includes various patches that address a few of the minor bugs that were present and affected it at launch. This shows just how much commitment the developer has to post-launch support, said ScreenRant.
Hours of New Content
Beyond the obvious graphical adjustments, there are various changes that are featured in the Dragon Quest remake, such as new story beats. Also, the hero will begin the game without his iconic armor pieces that can later be acquired through the narrative.
The game also has a ship, which was not originally featured in-game until Dragon Quest 2, in order to make traversal much easier. Instead of going back to Tantegel Castle to save the king, churches will not allow players to save their progress similar to what is featured in later Dragon Quest entries.
The Dragon Quest franchise is considered to be one of the most important JRPGs that were made and is said to have turned the genre into the huge commercial proposition it is in Japan today.
However, the series' Western release, Dragon Warrior, was not as acclaimed in the United States and many people have not yet been able to try the first game in the franchise, according to TimeExtension.
