Cancelled Project Details
Dubbed "Freedom", the proposed Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze sequel was intended for the Nintendo Switch platform, according to DidYouKnowGaming's video, Donkey Kong's Lost 3D Platformer & The Decay of Activision Blizzard. Developers from Vicarious Visions revealed insights into the abandoned project, describing an expansive open-world island setting where Donkey Kong would showcase his skateboarding skills.
Project Fate
Despite initial enthusiasm, the project faced setbacks. After just six months of development, momentum waned, and the project was ultimately scrapped in 2016. This decision coincided with Activision's strategic shift towards prioritizing its flagship Call of Duty franchise. Following the cancellation, Vicarious Visions' founders, Karthik and Guha Bala, departed to establish Velan Studios.
Legacy of Vicarious Visions
Established in 1991, Vicarious Visions joined Activision in 2005, contributing significantly to franchises like Guitar Hero, Skylanders, and Destiny 2. The studio underwent rebranding as Blizzard Albany in 2022, marking a new chapter in its storied history.
