Wayfinder Stops Sale of Early Access Game as Devs Recommit To Further Development Efforts

RPG Wayfinder has stopped sales of its early access game as the devs recommit to further development efforts following the split with publisher Digital Extremes.

A few months ago, Wayfinder's situation was more than comfortable as the title's publisher announced late last year that it was closing its publishing division. This meant that it would no longer be involved in working on Wayfinder.

But now, the game's creator, Airship Syndicate, has regained control of the project and announced that it has reached an agreement with Digital Extremes to start the transfer of Wayfinder in earnest.

The announcement added that this would follow up on a plan that was established when news first broke that Digital Extremes was shutting down its publishing arm. Wayfinder, which is a multiplayer game, will not be entirely under Airship Syndicate's control. The company will also act as the title's publisher.

This resulted in Wayfinder temporarily being pulled from sale but noted that the players who bought the game will still be able to access it and play as normally without any interruptions, according to PCGamesN.

On top of the announcement of the acquisition of Wayfinder, Airship Syndicate said that it has plans to continue developing the game. It wrote that it was committed to keeping the game active and vibrant, adding that they have no plans to let it disappear.

The company said that it would be revealing more information regarding the game's situation in the next four to six weeks and will be announced through Airship Syndicate's social media account.

The decision to shut down its publishing arm comes after Digital Extremes also laid off employees last year. It instead chose to focus on its own IP, Warframe and Soulframe. Airship Syndicate noted that Wayfinder will see major changes and improvements in the future, said MMORPG.

Suffering Various Issues

When Wayfinder was first previewed in 2023, many players considered it to look very promising but it then suffered server issues at launch. This resulted in hours-long queues, failed connections, and disconnections during gameplay. This, combined with the steep pricing of in-game items, quickly gave it a "mostly negative" rating on Steam.

In the recent announcement, Airship Syndicate acknowledged Wayfinder's troubled past but still believes in the title's potential. The studio wrote that when it was founded, the goal was to create great games set in compelling worlds filled with memorable characters and adventures.

It added that with those core principles in mind, they have spent the last few months working behind the scenes to challenge some of the core features in Wayfinder to create an experience that will be consistent with their standards and beliefs.

Airship Syndicate said that this was done while keeping in mind that they want to respect their founders and attract new players to the game. This is all done while staying feasible as a business model as a new independent publisher.

The decision to turn off sales of the game's early access was made presumably to prevent impressions of the title as it currently stands from growing. Its Steam rating has also now become mixed and has 47% positive reviews, according to PCGamer.
