Fans clamored for a sequel to EA's Road Rash series for years, and their wishes were finally granted--but not by EA. A game titled Road Redemption by DarkSeas Games is on its way after a successful funding drive on Kickstarter, and the developer has released new gameplay footage.
Road Redemption is currently in alpha, so many more features will be on the way--and don't be too harsh on what you see! As a big fan of Road Rash II, I will admit that it doesn't look quite the same as the series on which it's based, but I'm keeping in mind that this is alpha footage from an indie developer.
The core gameplay looks to be the same--race on motorcycles against traffic and attack competing racers--but it's to be expected that the exact game won't translate to modern technology, especially with different developers.
The Road Rash series includes six different titles, though the later releases are not held in high regard compared to the first few releases. The original game came out in 1991 for the Sega Genesis (Mega Drive outside North America), with Road Rash II following the next year. Over the next few years, the game received several ports to the 3DO and PC, with the next real sequel appearing on the Genesis in 1995 as Road Rash III: Tour De Force.
Several more ports to 3DO again, PlayStation and N64 were released over the next few years, ending with the 2003 GameBoy Advanced version. I have fond memories of playing Road Rash II on my Genesis, so I hope this spiritual successor is a good product in the end! Watch the footage below and leave a comment telling us what you think.
