At the Final Fantasy 14 Fan Fest 2024, fans eagerly awaiting a release date for the new expansion, Dawntrail, were left hanging. Director Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida clarified that the lack of a specific date isn't about teasing fans but about ensuring precision in the development process.
During a livestream on January 6th, Yoshida explained, "Though we do have an internal date that we are targeting, we are adjusting the schedule to make sure it's fine-tuned before announcing. We don't want a repeat of the Endwalker situation, where we had to delay the release. We are taking great care to ensure our schedule is on track before sharing the release date with our dedicated fanbase."
14 Time, Not Square Enix Time
Yoshida emphasized that the release window for Dawntrail is set for summer 2024. However, he clarified that the team is committed to avoiding any semblance of the infamous "Square Enix Time," referencing the notion of flexible release dates often associated with game development. He assured fans that they could expect the expansion precisely within the summer timeframe.
"It will be summer," Yoshida affirmed. "We will not be releasing on Square Enix time; we will be releasing on 14 time, which means properly in summer."
