The Mortal Kombat 1 community is urging players who have missed out on Season 1 skins to not purchase those on the store, but rather, change their console dates to earlier this month to unlock them for free.
It looks like Mortal Kombat 1, NetherRealm Studios' gory fighting game, just couldn't catch a break from controversy. Recently, the company has made some previously available skins from Season 1 purchasable via Dragon Krystals - the game's premium currency.
Skins like "Deadly Alliance Sub-Zero" and "Deadly Alliance Nitara" can be bought for 1,000 DK in the in-game shop. The thing is, these skins were part of Invasion Mode, meaning, they can be unlocked for free just by playing the seasonal content. The company wants to take advantage of FOMO, but it looks like it has failed in that regard.
Time is Money
Frustrated by the company's scummy monetization schemes, user @iScreamFGC went to Twitter to share a nifty trick they have discovered. They said that players can actually obtain the Season 1 Invasion Skins for free just by changing their console's date to before November 6. This was done on a PlayStation 5, however, another user said that this trick also worked on the Nintendo Switch version of the game.
After setting the console date to before November 6, players have to go into a Mesa and initiate a single fight. After that, the game will award them with every skin that is available in the Mesa. The Nintendo Switch user, @AdmirableEstimate258, added that the portals would bug out, which prevented them from going to other Mesas. This means that getting the skin recolors is impossible, but the idea of acquiring the Season 1 Invasion skins for free is likely more than enough for the community.
Players who have acquired the Season 1 skins using this method can just set their console's date back to the present with all of those goodies still intact.
Even though PS5 and Nintendo Switch players can get a hold of Season 1 skins for free, it seems that Xbox users cannot use this trick to do the same, as noted by @Lunatic_King14. It seems that PC players are in the same boat as well.

Patch Incoming?
With the trick mentioned above, it is possible that NetherRealm Studios has already caught wind of the situation. The company is probably making a hotfix to patch this up right now, especially since the exploit can negatively impact its bottom line.
Most of the game's player base are fed up with the company's monetization tactics. For those who don't know, NetherRealm Studios sold the Seasonal Fatalities Bundle not long ago, which includes the Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Winter Fatalities, for $9.99. That is on top of the game's premium price tag of $70.
So, do you own a PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch? If so, have you tried the exploit? Has it worked for you? Let us know in the comments!
Mortal Kombat 1 is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
