PS5 1440p Support Is Being Beta-Tested Right Now

A New Update Just Brought The PS5 1440p Support - Though It's Still In Beta

A new update giving the PS5 1440p support is already out, though the software is only in the beta testing phase and not released fully yet.

GamesRadar reports that the 1440p update is also only released to a select number of players. So if you're turning on your console right now but you're not one of the "lucky" ones, you won't be getting the QHD update for your system. Furthermore, this will only work if your TV or monitor actually supports 1440p resolution.

Here's the official wording from the PlayStation Blog detailing the PS5's 1440p support:

  • With the update, you can now choose 1440p resolution on a supported display when you go to Settings>Screen And Video>Video Output>Resolution.
  • Any game that actually supports 1440p resolution can be experienced at native QHD on a supported display, if you want.
  • If you're playing a game that can be rendered at a resolution beyond 4K, you can see fewer jagged edges from the image if you run the game down to 1440p.
  • To test whether your display supports 1440p, go to Settings>Screen And Video>Video Output>Test 1440p Output.

And that's it! If you feel like 4K isn't really to your liking, you can just run any supported game in QHD with the new PS5 1440p support update. Beware, however, that the update is still in beta and could still feature a handful of bugs that can hamper the experience. The PS5 is, after all, a console designed to run games in 4K by default.

Should the update be rolled out to everyone else who owns Sony's current-gen console, then it will make the PS5 the second system in the generation to offer native QHD content. Previously, the only console that can do that is the Xbox Series S, which was designed for 1440p and 1080p gaming. For now, though, it's unclear whether the PS5's 1440p support will also include high refresh rates.

What's The Point?

1440p isn't exactly the main target resolution for the current console generation. As such, some people might think this new PS5 update is a little weird. Here's why.

There are multiple reasons as to why current-gen consoles target 4K resolution. The most obvious one is the sheer sharpness and visual quality. The less obvious reason is the fact that there aren't a lot of QHD TVs being sold in the market. It's either 4K, 1080p, or some lower resolution. 1440p is more common in PC gaming circles, and not console gaming as a whole.

Still, Sony revealing their plans to support 1440p is nothing bad. This just means that folks will now have a different resolution option if they do so wish. Plus, 4K TVs can be pretty expensive, even on the low-end. QHD monitors for computers are cheaper, and therefore easier to get. The only drawback is that these monitors will often not have built-in speakers, unlike TVs.

But hey, that's the power of choice!
