Roblox Removes Iconic 'Oof' Death Sound Due To Licensing Issue

On Tuesday, July 26, gaming platform Roblox announced the iconic 'oof' sound to be removed from the game, citing licensing issues.

In a tweet, Roblox shares that they will immediately replace the sound with a default alternate after finally losing rights to the sound claimed by its video game music composer Tommy Tallarico.

Roblox to Remove Iconic 'Oof' After Licensing Issue

A report from Eurogamer says that the sound was produced by Tallarico, who later included the sound in the 2000 video game Messiah. Currently serving as Intellivision Entertainment's president, he is well known for the company's numerous delays in bringing the Intellivision Amico to market.

Although fans expressed disappointment with this new Roblox drama, the gaming publisher ensured that the death sound would be replaced immediately, so fans would not be dying in the games in silence.

The legal battle for the 'oof' sound has been the topic of discussion for some time. In 2021, the massively multiplayer online game faced a USD$ million lawsuit from the National Music Publishers Association after allegedly failing to pay for another year in licensing fees.

Roblox 'Oof' Is an Immortalized Meme

To explain the term, the 'oof' sound is the sound that plays whenever a Roblox character dies in-game. This sound has been one of the most prominent Roblox references for some time. Many meme formats have also originated from the childish sound. This sound would play in meme videos after an embarrassing or unfortunate event falls upon a subject.

In pop culture, 'oof' is a common reaction to anything questionable, disappointing, and somehow wrong. For example, with Roblox losing its license to use the 'oof" sound, you would hear fans exclaim "oof!" with this sad news. For more examples, see Twitter.

Just to add to how iconic this sound is, Post Malone once added the 'oof' sound to one of his remixes.

'Oofing' means what someone would say when they do not care, but they should say something.

From planning to remove R6 to replacing 'oof,' some Roblox fans are disappointed with how recent game changes unfold this year. What else could be removed from Roblox? What other changes can we expect in the coming days? Sadly, the 'oof' sound is gone, but players can still have a lot to look forward to. Roblox is a game that features a myriad of different mini-games that any player can enjoy.

But fans should not be overly sad as Roblox also announced that it will be expanding its Avatar shop soon. Maybe old removed features can be bought there? Well, who knows? Stay updated with the latest Roblox news here.
