It's now been confirmed that a Gotham Knights prequel comic is going to accompany the game on release day, in order to shed some further light on the game's backstory.
As reported by Push Square, the aforementioned Gotham Knights prequel comic will be titled Batmar: Gotham Knights - Gilded City. It is penned by former Rise Of The Black Panther writer Evan Narcisse, and illustrated by Harley Quinn's ABEL. The prequel comic will tell the story of Batman's last case before he is blown to bits at the very start of Warner Bros Montreal's open-world adventure.
But aside from the prequel story, DC has also announced that the comic will also have a parallel storyline set in the 1880s. This links back to Gotham Knights' main campaign, which involves the titular crimefighting superhero crew dealing with a rage-inducing virus afflicting the city's citizens. The parallel story features a different vigilante called Runaway, perhaps an old-timey version of Batman, who also does their own investigation into the aforementioned virus.
As per the DC Comics announcement, the prequel comic is a six-issue monthly limited series. Aside from its general release, it will also be distributed in Brazil, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Mexico as an individual issue launch and as a catch-all hardcover collected edition. The latter edition will also launch a little later in Poland and the United States on July 25th next year.
To cap things off, anybody who buys an issue of the Gotham Knights prequel comic will also get a game code which you can redeem for an in-game item. The item you can get from the debut issue is the BOSO22 skin for the Batcycle, which is available day one.
Warner Bros Montreal is finally ready to launch the game on October 25th after a few setbacks. For one, the game's last-gen ports for the PS4 and Xbox One have both been canceled earlier this year, effectively making Gotham Knights a PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC exclusive
People who pre-ordered the game on their last-gen consoles were understandably disappointed, but perhaps its for the best. WB may have wanted to avoid a Cyberpunk 2077 situation at all cost, where last-gen hardware was simply too weak to handle the game's vision - resulting in piss-poor performance.

Gotham Knights Story Details
Obviously we cannot give you anything too intimate about the story of GK. That would be spoiler-y. However, WB did release a trailer featuring an age-old cabal in the DC universe called the Court Of Owls, which will obviously play a central role in the story of the game:
For the unaware, the Court Of Owls is an organized crime group and secret society. They are among the long-time enemies of Batman, and in the New 52 comics, Bruce Wayne even believed as a youngster that they are responsible for the deaths of his parents.
But in Gotham Knights, the organization is now going to come to blows with the new group of young heroes sworn to protect Gotham after Batman's demise. Though this wasn't really something that Nightwing believed, with him saying in the trailer above that the Court Of Owls is a myth. Well, he and his pals in Batgirl, Robin, and Red Hood are going to learn pretty soon that the group is real - and won't let anyone stand in their way now that the Dark Knight is gone.
