The Release Window For The Last Of Us TV Show Has Been Revealed

A release window for The Last Of Us on HBO has been revealed by a top executive, and the release of the show itself doesn't seem too far off now.

As reported by GameRant, HBO president Casey Bloys says that the live-action adaptation of the award-winning game franchise will be out "closer to early 2023." That's it. It's not a lot of information still, but maybe fans will take what they can get. The show's been largely kept under wraps since its first announcement in 2020, afer all.

By "closer to early 2023," this could mean that the live-action The Last Of Us TV show is going to launch in Q1 2023. Bloys didn't expand on the release window in his original interview with Hollywood Reporter, where he mostly talked about a few other shows in the studio's pipeline - all of them irrelevant to the subject matter at hand.

The live-action The Last Of Us TV show is headlined by The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal as Joel, and Game Of Thrones' Bella Ramsey as Ellie. The show also stars Nick Offerman as Joel's friend Bill (the one who likes his traps), and they're joined by Anna Torv (Fringe) as Tess, and original game actor Merle Dandridge as "Queen Firefly" Marlene, with fellow OG cast members Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker (the original voices of Joel and Ellie) in still unannounced roles.

This project is a big part of Sony and PlayStation's bid to expand their IPs into non-gaming media. The Last Of Us joins a handful of other current PlayStation IPs jumping into the big and small screens, which was headlined by the Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg-led Uncharted, as well as the still in-development Horizon Zero Dawn (allegedly called Horizon 2074), God Of War, and Gran Turismo shows.

If the project turns out to be good (as said by Pedro Pascal himself), then it would serve as the saving grace for game-based TV shows that have been quite underwhelming. A few good examples would be Paramount Plus' live-action Halo series and Netflix's The Witcher season 2, both of which haven't been well-received by fans upon release - despite relatively better critic reviews.

What We Know So Far About HBO's The Last Of Us

Here are a few more details about the TV series, shared by CBR

For the first season of the show, Naughty Dog co-president and original game co-creator Neil Druckmann was brought in to write the screenplay. Chernobyl's Craig Mazin served as the executive producer on the project. All in all, the show's first season will have a total of 10 episodes that will adapt the story of the first game, albeit with a few changes.

Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal both have high praises for the show as the lead actors. Ramsey said that her work on the project feels like a landmark moment in her young career, with her saying that it feels like the biggest thing she's ever done - even if she was in Game Of Thrones before. So that gives it a bit of gravitas if you think about it.

As for Pascal, he reassured fans of The Last Of Us that the TV show will live up to the games. These were the claims he made in an interview with the German magazine Neelix.
