GTA 6 is going to be Rockstar Games' only chance at getting back in the good graces of franchise fans, after the absolutely horrendous launch of the GTA trilogy definitive edition. They even had to cancel a couple of planned remasters in order to focus on the next big GTA title.
This information was relayed by an industry insider who, according to CNET, apparently had a "reliable source with clear accuracy" on Rockstar's future plans. The aforementioned planned remasters were reportedly GTA 4 and the first Red Dead Redemption, whicch would've taken away valuable resources and skilled devs from the team making GTA 6.
As per a reliable source with clear accuracy on Rockstar plans, remasters of GTA IV & RDR1 were on the table a few years ago, but Rockstar chose not to proceed with the projects in mind.
The poor reception of the Trilogy DE might be a reason behind that decision.#GTAIV #RDR1— Tez2 (@TezFunz2) July 4, 2022
It's also worth noting that the troubled release of the remastered trilogy took a lot of wind out of Rockstar's sails as well. When that collection came out, it was so full of game-breaking bugs, questionable visual choices, and massive downgrades that the company HAD to bring back the original versions of GTA 3, San Andreas, and Vice City just to try and rebuild broken relationships with gamers.
Things weren't always so bad, though. Rockstar and parent company Take-Two were both banking on nostalgia with the release of the remaster. And initial sales were quite good, with numbers "exceeding" expectations at up to $10 million in sales (via Video Games Chronicle).
Then, the hype died down in a major way after gamers saw just how broken the remaster was. As per the numbers taken straight from Take-Two, the sales of the GTA trilogy definitive edition didn't even hit 1 million units during the company's most recent financial quarter. While this didn't exactly put Take-Two and Rockstar in the poorhouse (GTA 5's sales were still their main cash cow), it was a clear indication that the trilogy's release went wrong.
With no GTA 4 and RDR1 remasters in the pipeline, Rockstar's devs can now bring their undivided attention into the next game in the popular open-world franchise, though it remains unclear just how far along the development is right now.

New GTA 6 Leaks
Since there's absolutely no official news on the next big GTA game at this point, all we have are unconfirmed rumors and leaks. But a recently deleted post may be the most interesting yet due to how detailed it is.
Here's a video from WhatCulture Gaming on YouTube discussing the leak:
They talked about a lot of things, but the biggest one is that the leaker says GTA 6 will also have three main characters like GTA 5. But the one difference is that one of the playable characters is a woman: a police officer named Rose. The other two are Ricardo, a Colombian ex-special agent who dreams to have the same life cartel bosses have; and Casey, a former boxer who has "no problem hurting people for money."
The video itself has a few more talking points, so be sure to watch it if you don't want to miss anything.
Next up is an apparent new "update" on a GTA 6 release date. According to ComicBook.com, prominent Rockstar Games insider Tez 2 says that the game is planned for a late 2023 to early 2024 launch. This is in line with other rumors saying that the GTA release date is sometime in spring 2024, though a few others indicate it's going to get a 2023 launch date and will be delayed the following year.
Well, whatever GTA 6's release date may be, it surely is not this year. So you'll have to wait.
