PlayStation is the latest video game industry giant to decide to skip this year's Gamescom, following Nintendo's prior announcement earlier this year.
This was confirmed as much in an interview with German game publication Games Wirtschaft. As such, GamesRadar reports that fans will completely miss out on new information about Sony's big AAA hitters, which includes Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Forspoken, and God Of War Ragnarok - perhaps alongside more new details on PSVR2.
With PlayStation skipping Gamescom 2022, the event's list will have now scratched two of the Big Three game developers/publishers (Nintendo, as previously mentioned, is also skipping). Team Blue will also be joining Activision Blizzard and Take-Two Interactive in the growing list of big industry names that won't be attending.
Whatever Sony's reasons are for skipping Gamescom 2022, however, weren't revealed. This is once again similar to Nintendo who also didn't reveal their reasons. But while their absence might be felt all throughout the showcase, they're still only part of the 250 confirmed exhibitors joining this year. But this absence is quite uncharacteristic for PlayStation as a whole.
GameSpot notes that PlayStation is almost always one of the largest exhibitors in the event over the years. Since Gamescom was first inaugurated back in 2009, Sony has been in all but one iteration and has revealed multiple big games in past exhibitions.
Among these games include current classics like The Last Of Us, Horizon Zero Dawn, and even bigger, more modern ones like Horizon Forbidden West and an "untitled God of War sequel" which everyone now knows is God Of War Ragnarok. Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4 was also first revealed in Gamescom, same as Death Stranding and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.
Gamescom 2022 is scheduled from August 24-28 and will be both in-person (in Cologne, Germany) and digitally streamed. And since PlayStation and Nintendo have already skipped, perhaps the floor is Microsoft and Xbox's to wipe now - unless they also skip the festivities and go their own way.

Is PlayStation Going To Host Its Own Showcase, Then?
PlayStation skipping Gamescom 2022 is kind of a big deal, considering how big it is of a brand in gaming. But their size and influence also basically allows them to go their own way and host their own showcases - which is something that's rumored to not come soon.
We at GameNGuide reported last March that the next big PlayStation showcase likely won't come until September. This rumor weirdly came from somebody not even connected to Sony or PlayStation at all: Nick "shpeshal_nick" Baker, who hosts the XboxEra podcast. Aside from saying that a big showcase won't be coming soon, Baker also said that Sony could actually reveal a new Sly Cooper game there when it does come.
For now, the most recent one is June's State Of Play presentation, which already revealed a lot of big names: the Resident Evil 4 Remake for PS5, Final Fantasy XVI's 2023 release window, and Marvel's Spider-Man coming to PC (via the PlayStation blog), among other massive news.
