YouTuber Custom Designs A 'PS5 Slim,' And It Works Great-Albeit With Compromises

The PS5 is almost two years into its life cycle at this point, having been released at the tail end of 2020. As such, many people are expecting the "inevitable" console refresh from Sony.Obviously, there's no PS5 Slim or even a PS5 Pro yet. But one YouTuber took it upon themselves to DIY a slimmer version of the console, and it looks amazing.

Tech YouTuber DIY Perks managed to create their DIY PS5 Slim way before Sony ever even came close, all by stripping down the original console and stuffing them inside a water-cooled box as per PlayStationLifestyle. As of this writing, the video detailing the build has reached over 852,000 views from people eager to see how he did it.

Here is the video if you want to watch it:

In it, he also mentions how the PlayStation 5 is more or less on the way to having its hardware refresh - around 3 to 4 years after the release of the base version. That's what happened with every PlayStation console starting from the PS2 all the way to the PS4. Alas, Sony still hasn't bared plans for a refresh yet.

Either way, the project itself is a massive feat of engineering considering just how small this "PS5 Slim" is compared to the digital-only unit he used as a base. It is only 2cm thick - just a fraction thicker than a DVD case, making the project even tougher to fathom than at first glance.

Eventually, the entire project had him taking out the console's massive air cooling mechanisms, writes VG247. Then, he cooled the hardware using a custom watercooling loop that's attached to a power brick, which can be easily tucked out of sight behind a table. As you can see in the video there, the "PS5 Slim" is not even close to what an official slim version will look like - which will likely still be air-cooled, otherwise it would cost a fortune.

As previously mentioned, the PS5 is just around two years into its life cycle. So this technically means that Sony still has time to design and announce a PS5 Slim alongside a Pro version. But until then, you'll have to wait for any official word.

How The 'PS5 Slim' Was Made

There's a lot of technical jargon at play here. But what DIY perks basically did is remove the sizeable cooling system - including the fin stacks and motherboard which when combined is already 5 ½ cm (about 6 inches) thick.

Since the slimmed-down console can obviously never be cooled by air anymore, he had to use watercooling. But even then, he had to make a ton of compromises with the watercooling loop. He took out/modified anything and everything that were too tall or thick to fit into the 2 cm-thin case to slim it down. He also custom-designed the entire cooling system itself to fit.

In the end, the resulting cooling system was more than enough to tame the PS5's beastly chip. He even fired up Horizon Forbidden West to test the console out in terms of thermals. The system passed with flying colors. Now, if only Sony would finally announce an official PS5 Slim, then we're in business.
