You Can Only Get New PS4 Games Until 2025, According To Sony

New PS4 Games Will No Longer Be Made By 2025, Says Sony

There's only three years left until first-party PS4 games will no longer come out, and this has been made clear by Sony themselves.

The gaming industry giant made this decision after revealing that it has sold over 1.5 billion PS4 games for the entire duration of the last-gen console's life cycle, reports VG247. But while no actual words were shared that the development of first-party PS4 games will stop, it was indirectly revealed in a graph with the company's recent Business Segment Briefing.

In the graph, Sony suggested that 50% of its planned games will launch on the PS5, 30% for PC, and 20% for mobile devices. The PS4 was noticeably absent there, indicating clear as day that the last-gen console will be fully abandoned within the next three years.

This would be a massive change from three years ago, when 90% of Sony's first-party games were developed for the PlayStation 4, with the remaining 10% made for PC.

Sony released the PS5 back in November 2020, and it came with full backwards compatibility for PS4 games. This fact alone could still mean that while new PS4 games will be phased out, Sony still knows they can make a buck from them.

As reported by The Gamer, the company revealed that they still earn 65 percent of their total PSN revenue from last-gen games. Aside from that, 69 percent of all PlayStation Plus subscriptions come from people who own PS4s as well. This could be chalked up to folks still not being able to get their hands on a current-gen console, though.

But this news goes far beyond indicating that the last-gen console is inching closer than ever to its end. Three years is plenty of time for PS4 owners to upgrade to the new console. It also means that developers can now fully focus their efforts on making games for the far more powerful hardware of the PlayStation 5.

This is made clear with big studios now canceling their last-gen ports of their games - Warner Bros being the perfect example with Gotham Knights

What Are The New PS4 Games You Could Still Look Forward To?

In the wake of the bittersweet news regarding what could be one of the best gaming consoles of all time, there's still a few great upcoming games to look forward to for the PS4. Here are some of them, courtesy of GamesRadar

  • The Quarry (June 10th): A new choice-driven horror game from the makers of Until Dawn, The Quarry pays homage to classic horror movies like Friday The 13th, Cabin In The Woods, and Scream, to name a few. It was designed to have an insane 186 different endings, which will make sure that each player's playthrough will be far different than others - and will contribute to a massive replay value.

  • Stray (TBA): In Stray, you play as a stray cat that has to traverse a world where humans don't seem to exist anymore. Your goal is to be reunited with your family, but not before untangling the mysteries of a long-forgotten city filled with robots.

  • God Of War: Ragnarok (TBA): Sony Santa Monica is still keeping last-gen in play with the highly anticipated sequel to their 2018 masterpiece. Kratos and Atreus' father-and-son relationship will be further tested as Ragnarok approaches - aka the end of the world in Norse mythology.

  • Hogwarts Legacy (Holiday 2022): In Hogwarts Legacy, you get to live out your Wizarding world fantasies as a student of the eponymous school of witchcraft and wizardry. You will be dealing with baddies using wand combat, see and interact with magical beasts, and visit the surrounding areas of Hogwarts - some of them places you've never seen before in the films.
