The long-rumored but still unannounced The Last Of Us remake for the PS5 is reportedly pegged for a release during this year's holiday season, as per numerous sources.
This remake, according to a report by Eurogamer, was said to have been first helmed by Sony's Visual Arts Service Group, a subsidiary based in San Diego. That is, until original developer Naughty Dog was said to have taken over the project since.
Now, numerous people in the game industry (including a very prominent and reliable leaker) are almost unanimous in proclaiming that it's coming by late 2022. Among these folks is game journalist Jeff Grubb, who said that he keeps hearing that the rumored The Last Of Us remake is coming out this year - and that he's "pretty confident" about a holiday 2022 release window.
Grubb made his claim in a recent episode of the Kinda Funny Gamescast, where they also shared their thoughts on why 2023 will be the greatest year ever for gaming. You can watch the episode here:
Another person to refer to the remake is Tom Henderson, who has proven his reliability by leaking out accurate details about numerous AAA releases from last year (Battlefield 2042, especially). He also claims that he has "hear from multiple people" about the The Last Of Us remake being "nearly finished" and due to come out later this year:

But until the development team at Naughty Dog makes an official announcement, these rumors will remain unconfirmed. They are, after all, still pretty busy with adding multiplayer to The Last Of Us 2. Aside from that, they also have their hands full with HBO's The Last Of Us live action TV series, which stars The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal and Game Of Thrones' Bella Ramsey. That show is due for next year.

What Will This The Last Of Us Remake Look Like?
There are no indications of how Naughty Dog is tackling a remake of the original TLOU game, a title they've already remastered for the PS4 after it debuted for the PS3 at the tail-end of the seventh generation.
Now, remakes and remasters are two very different things. A remake changes a lot more than a simple remaster by adding new gameplay elements, visuals, and perhaps even new characters, according to Fossbytes. A remaster does less by doing things such as improving textures, frame rate, and resolution, among other more surface-level things.
It might be possible that Naughty Dog is using a more modern engine for the PS5 remake of The Last Of Us. Maybe you could expect the original game's already beautiful post-apocalyptic environments to be even more detailed, alongside a good frame rate and resolution bump that the more powerful hardware of the PS5 will allow.
Until an official announcement and reveal comes, however, this is all mere speculation. But knowing the team at Naughty Dog, they're not going to want to botch a remake anytime soon.
