Gamers compete in PC gaming at the 'Nvidia' booth during the Electronic Entertainment Expo E3 at the Los Angeles Convention Center on June 13, 2017 in Los Angeles, California.

In a move out of nowhere, Sony's gaming brand released a guide explaining popular gaming lingo, with the list of definitions posted on the PlayStation blog in alphabetical order. According to GameRant, the guide contains a total of 109 terms and covers "anything and everything that a person may come across when playing video games, and is apparently not just for new gamers but experienced ones as well.

You can check the guide out for yourself on the PlayStation website, if you're curious. And it looks like Sony did its homework, as very popular (not to mention important) gaming lingo can be found there, defined in clear terms.

Aside from the popular gaming terms, there are even some that players of years with experience might have never even encountered before, says PlayStation Lifestyle. Either way, the purpose of the guide is twofold: help newbie gamers understand what other players mean when they say something, and perhaps give experienced gamers a quick, lighthearted laugh.

But the underlying importance of this guide is also clear: it can help people communicate better when playing online, where talking to your teammates is key to grabbing victory. If you're in a heated match, for example (more so if it's ranked), you don't want to be confused with the directions your teammates give you on the fly, or you'll likely be blamed if your team loses.

The guide has been reposted on the PS5 subreddit, where it has earned over 5k upvotes and people were commenting on how useful it can be. Some folks are saying that these "official" definitions can come in handy considering that they might struggle explaining the terms to newbies, even if they were familiar with it.

While the release of this guide can be handy, however, some fans might have preferred that Sony posted an update on a few of their upcoming big exclusives. One example is God of War Ragnarok, which after its reveal back in September last year hasn't seen any major updates.

The Most Important Gaming Lingo You Should Be Aware Of

As previously mentioned, the official PlayStation guide to gaming lingo contains 109 terms. Let's be honest: you don't have time to see them all. But here are the most important ones you should know, so you won't feel completely left out next time around.

  • Git gud: A deliberate misspelling of the term "get good," this means that you should practice to get good at the game you're playing if you're bad at it. It is popular with players of FromSoftware's games, who have also been using the term to make people understand just how hard these games are - even to experienced and really good players. If a player tells you to git gud, they're basically saying that you should practice.

  • Noob: An abbreviated version of the word "newbie," which means you're a newcomer to the game with barely any prior experience. This term is often used as an insult targeting someone with considerably less gaming skill and experience compared to a veteran.

  • Wrecked/Rekt: This is a term used by players to describe their destruction of an enemy player in-game, where they easily best an opposing player in certain encounters (usually one-on-one). Often used in the term "get rekt," this word is used as a piece of trash talk.

  • DPS: An abbreviation of the term "damage per second," this refers to a character in a game whose sole purpose is to deal as much damage as possible to enemies.
