"Cyberpunk 2077" is still getting its major story expansion, but it won't go the same route as "Witcher 4" and will "stay within its bounds," so to speak.
What that means is that the upcoming "Cyberpunk 2077" expansion content will still be made using CD Projekt Red's in-house RedEngine, instead of Unreal Engine 5 which will be used for "Witcher 4." This engine has been in use since 2011's "The Witcher 2: Assassins Of Kings" (via GameSpot), but has since gone through major updates to keep it up-to-par with succeeding generations.
This was made clear by CDPR in a recent news release on their website. In it, they detailed the partnership deal they struck with Epic Games for the use of UE5 but didn't neglect to mention their proprietary engine despite the major switch for "Witcher 4."
For now, however, the confirmation that RedEngine 4 will be used for upcoming "Cyberpunk 2077" expansion content is also a confirmation that the expansion does exist, writes GameRanx. But there's absolutely nothing else shared about the expansion itself-no gameplay details, no story details, and no release date, even.
Ahead of the release of "Cyberpunk" back in 2020, fans expected story expansions to be revealed. That obviously wasn't the case, as the game had far more important things to be concerned about. But ever since the next-gen update for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S (and update 1.5 on PC) was launched, fans are clamoring for new information about the first major story DLC for "Cyberpunk."
There's also this one remaining thing that will be made using RedEngine: the next-gen update for "Witcher 3," which is planned for a Q2 2022 release date (around April to June).
The third "Witcher" game was also developed using CD Projekt's proprietary engine, which could mean that work on the "Cyberpunk" expansion might be pushed just a little bit to an even later date to allow Geralt of Rivia to go next-gen.

[SPOILERS] What Will The 'Cyberpunk 2077' Expansion Be About?
CDPR is extremely mum about details regarding the first major expansion for "Cyberpunk 2077." But one thing is for certain: specific avenues of the game's story, alongside a handful of characters' backstories, remain unexplored in the base game.
Case in point, it is the game's multiple endings. According to GameRant, one of the endings with the most unanswered questions is the Arasaka Ending, which sees V spending time in an Arasaka orbital medical station trying to find a way to remove Johnny Silverhand's construct from their brain. The expansion could explore the two ways this ending goes: V choosing to live on forever as an engram inside Mikoshi or choosing to live out their remaining days on Earth.
Aside from that, specific characters (most of them well-beloved by fans) could also get a deeper look at their lives. Among these include Jackie Welles, who a lot of people believe was grossly underrepresented. Or this could involve the likes of Judy, Panam, or even villains like Adam Smasher-a character players only recognize for his horrifying looks.
