"Starfield" is one of the most highly anticipated releases of the current gaming generation. There are not a lot of details about it aside from a confirmed release date, but new information just emerged via a recently uploaded dev diary.
IGN reports that among the biggest details shared in the video concerns the game's factions. According to Bethesda, "Starfield" will allow players to join "multiple" factions and even join the bad guys if they want to. Lead quest designer Will Shen confirmed this.
Here is the dev diary courtesy of IGN's official YouTube channel:
Shen revealed the development team's decision-making process for the game's narrative. He said that the team wanted to give players the option to choose which part of the game world they wanted to engage in. Three major factions were revealed in the diary, and they are as follows:
- United Colonies: Basically "Starfield's" version of the Galactic Republic
- Freestar Collective: Bethesda calls this a "space western" faction who mostly stay "out in the frontier."
- Ryujin Industries: Basically "Starfield's" version of the Corpo lifepath in "Cyberpunk 2077."
But the one faction that lets players "join the bad guys" is the Crimson Fleet. Bethesda says that this faction is composed of pirate raiders. And what do pirates do? They pillage, kill, and take what they want-perhaps the perfect starting point if you want to do an "evil playthrough."
That, however, isn't the only thing with the Crimson Fleet, says design director Emil Pagliarulo. It will also reportedly allow players to basically be undercover cops-infiltrate the space pirates and snitch on them.

More New 'Starfield' Details
Aside from all of the discussions about factions, Bethesda also revealed how they revamped the game's character creation suite and made it "more detailed." Bethesda mainstay Todd Howard said that players will be able to pick their character's background and specific traits that will "define" them throughout the course of the game.
Not to mention, Bethesda has revealed the first player companion NPC: a robot named VASCO, which IGN says was named after the legendary Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. This naming decision is said to be connected to the studio's desire to make the game more grounded and closer to real-life than previous space-based RPGs.
VASCO, alongside other still-unannounced companions, are said to be designed to make their feelings about you known. The devs revamped the NPC reaction systems to make it so believable that some players might even think "they're a real person" due to their off-the-cuff comments.
Either way, every single detail will be examined with more scrutiny as the game gets closer than ever to its release date. It is scheduled to launch exclusively on the Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC on November 11th. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one.
