There it goes! The Oculus Rift development kit is completely sold out, according to their website. We've known for a while now that they aren't producing any more, since they've run out of components to create them, but they kept selling them until they had no more. The decision to let it just run out of stock made sense for them since they have a second edition dev kit in the works, possibly similar to the improved Crystal Cove prototype they showed off at this year's CES.
They have sold over 50,000 units worldwide but the demand is far greater than that. Fortunately they have that superior second edition dev kit is in the works that's planned for release sometime this summer. Other good news is that the creators say that want it to be released as close as possible to the consumer version, so it might not be that much longer before we get an official release date for the final retail edition. A price point would be great as well, although they have stated that they don't want to make this a rich person's toy, and that it will release for as close to the price of the dev kit ($300) as possible.
Developers are already figuring out some amazing things to do with the first kit. They've placed people into worlds like "Game of Thrones", Seinfeld, The Legend of Zelda, and even are designing new peripherals that will work in tangent with it like the Virtuix Omni (for realistic movement) and 3D-printed guns.
This really looks like the future of gaming, folks. Expect some big news to hit this June at E3.
