The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is among my personal favorite RPGS, one that I sunk countless hours into across different characters. Its open-world map and commitment to a mysterious storyline seriously drew in and immersed me when I was younger, and it was one of the first more mature RPGs I played.
Unfortunately, it hasn't aged all that well. It's still playable, but after sequels Oblivion and Skyrim the UI and combat system seem so outdated and difficult to use that it's hard to get through, at least for me. Not to mention the graphics: great at the time, but downright unattractive now, especially compared to its successors. It is a 12 year-old game, after all.
Luckily, people are working to solve these issues, and they have given us a new trailer (below) of their progress! The mod project responsible for this is called Skywind, and it's taking Morrowind's world, characters, and quests and putting them into Skyrim's engine, complete with shiny new textures and graphics.
A comitted team has been working on this project for more than two years now, and includes more than 70 volunteers after starting with just eight modders.
They're not importing the straight Morrowind game, but recording the written dialogue with 30 voice actor volunteers alongside the coders, artists, and whatever else they need. It's one of the most impressive projects coming out of the modding community that I've seen, and as an avid fan of the series I'm pretty excited.
Watch the trailer they've just released, which demonstrates how far they've come recreating the world. Fans will see some of their favorite locales, such as the early base town Balmora. The game looks great, and hopefully it isn't too long before we see some sort of release! Visit their website for more information.
