Stainless Games has announced that Carmageddon: Reincarnation will be hitting Steam Early Access next month, on March 27th. They've also released a new trailer showing off the damage modeling on the cars, an important feature in a game that's all about causing as much vehicular mayhem as possible.
The original Carmageddon released way back in 1997 and soon amassed a ton of controversy. The big selling point for the game is that it was basically a videogame adaptation of "Death Race 2000". You could win a race by actually completing a race and coming in 1st, but no one actually did that. More likely you won by killing every other opponent, smashing them to pieces with your souped-up, weaponized vehicle. True psychopaths could win a third way, by running over every single person on a level. Considering that some levels held hundreds and hundreds of blood-packed humans (and cows!) just waited to be burst, that was quite the challenge. A few subsequent sequels never rose to the same heights as the first but a Kickstarter project last year seeks to bring the game back to its roots.
"It's brilliant to see our demonic baby rise screaming from the grave," said Patrick Buckland, co-founder and CEO of Stainless Games and creative genius/madman behind Carmageddon in a statement. "This time we could finally do the stuff that we wanted to do 17 years ago. More blood was the main thing. Rivers of livers - that's what we wanted. Being publisher as well as developer means we get to be stupid. Properly, professionally stupid. And this game is stupider than Jupiter. I mean really silly - but in a good way. Nobody else makes games that make you cry with laughter - but we do. And did I mention the livers?"
Although the game will be available on Steam Early Access March 27th, Kickstarter Backers will be able to access it two weeks earlier. This is now in a pre-alpha phase so it's still very, very early, and things will change dramatically until its final version. Stainless Games has sold three million copies of the mobile version of Carmageddon on Android and iOS and hopefully those people will see a new version of the game and jump at a chance to play it.
Remember- hold on to your livers and aim for the cows.
