Dungeons & Dragons: Neverwinter was released last June, joining its D&D companion Dungeons & Dragons Online in the massively multiplayer online role-playing space. The two games are different, and made by different development studios, but DDO has been running since 2006, an impressive feat.
Neverwinter is of course the newer of the two, and is still being tweaked and perfected. As such, we're getting a video update from the developers with commentary from Rob Overmeyer, Executive Producer on the game. He narrates the changes we can expect in the game's next update as some gameplay is shown.
It's a genuinely helpful video, especially for those who play the game and want a heads up on what changes to expect. If you don't, it's a good glimpse into what the game looks like, and an idea of their philosophy and vision for the game.
Neverwinter launched with lukewarm to somewhat positive reception last summer. It was praised for its player-created quests and fun combat that's more action-oriented than that in DDO.
More and more single-player franchises are being converted into MMOs (there were two single-player Neverwinter Nights games), such as The Elder Scrolls (Elder Scrolls Online currently in development) and The Old Republic (the Star Wars MMO following the Knights of the Old Republic single-player RPGs).
The developer commentary in the trailer explains that they'll be focusing on PvP (player vs. player) in the next update, making the game more balanced by adjusting crowd control abilities in particular. They're also looking to alter attributes slightly for balance, and it sounds like they're committed to making their game better for everyone as time goes on, which players will no doubt appreciate.
Neverwinter is available for free download from the game's website, and can be played with no subscription fee. There are currently six character classes to choose from for the traditional D&D playable races.
