The Assassin's Creed series is unique in that it's not tied down to one specific location. The incorporation of historical figures into the story lets them try a different era with each game, messing with real-world history and changing the setting around the world events. It's because of this that gamers are clamoring to find out just where Assassin's Creed V will be set. For a while Japan was the big rumor but now there are new rumors swirling about, laying claim to England or even Russia being the setting.
Ubisoft Producer Jade Raymond recently squashed rumors that the series would be going to Japan in the next installment, although she left it up in the air for the series. Never say never, right?
Next Uproxx got their hands on a press release they're quick to say could be fake, and is thus pretty damn suspect. It claims to be an authentic release that says the game will take place in London during the industrial revolution. The specific text-
"In the events of the ongoing Industrial Revolution, Assassin's Creed V follows the story of Samuel Fey, as he enters the Assassin Order in a time of change and Templar rule. Fey is a successful and respectful entrepreneur, who works outside the corrupt law to guarantee the security of his own and others' futures. Taking place during the closing years of the Industrial Revolution in Victorian London, players will explore all new locales as they uncover the truth behind the hidden ongoing rebellion."
Take that with a huge damn grain of a salt. An entire shaker.
Other, more fun rumors swirl around coded messsages that Ubisoft has been sending out themselves via their AC Initiates Twitter page.
One tweet contained numbers that turned out to be coordinates that point to a location in Russia. A second tweet seemed to corroborate that, at least according to internet sleuths who cracked the code and turned them into locations. It seems to point towards Barguzin, Russia. The country seems like a more likely setting since the "Assassin's Creed: The Fall" comic book series follows the story of Nikolai Orelov, the famous Russian Assassin, during the 1880s. That could mean nothing though too- just take a look at "Assassin's Creed: Brahman", a comic which took place in India and didn't have anything to do with the subsequent release of Assassin's Creed IV.
But of course, it's still anyone's guess, and Ubisoft seems to love taunting us. For my money, it'll be hard to best Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. It's easily the best in the series and the major reason for that is because it's so un-Creed like. The worst parts of the game are the repetitive Assassin's Creed nonsense you got sick of in the last installments- climbing and synchronizing, going on mundane tasks, assassinating. The real meat of Black Flag is the seafaring, manning your ship and being the pirate you always were destined to be, looting and pillaging and becoming a real terror on the seas.
But still, it's fascinating to think of all the locations, all the eras they could set the next game. Do any of these tickle your fancy? What about one entirely set in the future?
