OUYA was a great success story on Kickstarter but that hasn't translated into game sales. Games have been selling poorly on the little system and the fact that you're playing on an outdated Tegra 3 chip, which is outmatched by nearly every big cell phone release last year, stopped people from jumping in with no reservations. Only a few games like Towerfall have been actual successes and even they are looking for new platforms to expand their business. But OUYA is constantly being changed and refined, and now we have a 16 GB version that seeks to fix a bunch of issues with the last iteration.
Coming in at 16GB and sporting an all-new matte black finish, the console will retail for $129.99 and boast a few improvements. The original 8GB OUYA is still available for $99.99 but here are the new features that comes for $30 more.
- Doubled memory
- An all new matte black finish
- Boosted WiFi connectivity
- Latest firmware enhancements for better overall performance
- Refined controller
That controller is supposed to have better buttons, better analog sticks, and faster response time. The WiFi improvements will help with a bunch of issues gamers have had with connecting to the internet, too. Now if they could get the games they need! There's been a lot of questions about the business model of offering up every single game for free (there's demos available for everything in the catalogue) and the fact that so many are simply mobile ports. A console like this needs more exclusives- why would I pay for another system that just plays the same games I already own on my cell phone?
You can pick up your 16 GB console directly from the official shop at https://shop.ouya.tv- it's coming shortly to Amazon. Are these changes enough to make you reconsider the OUYA or is it too late for the little console?
