The Nintendo Switch is the latest console from Nintendo and is easily one of the most anticipated. Details are still few for now but a new set of patents from Nintendo might suggest a VR head accessory may be developed for the Nintendo Switch.
NeoGAF user Rosti was able to discover a Nintendo patent that appears to be a headseat that enables VR tech to the Nintendo Switch. The accessory is referred to as an HMD (head mounted display) that looks to work similarly to Google and Samsung's smartphone VR solutions. But instead of the smartphones being docked on the headset, the Nintendo Switch would use the tablet to dock inside the console. The Nintendo Switch tablet will be placed inside the headset which uses lenses to create the 3D effect.
The patent also describes that the Joycon controllers can be used while playing with the headst. Its not mentioned however that the Joycon controllers are able to support motion controls. This would make the Nintendo Switch similar to the Oculus Rift without the recently released motion controls when it was first released.
The patent also describes how the motion will be tracked with the Nintendo Switch. However, the patent does not indicate where the motion controls will be housed so it could either be on the tablet or the headset.
If this rumor proves to be true, then the Nintendo Switch has offered a truly unique console combining, home console, portable and vr gaming in one console. VR gaming is still in its infancy today and with Nintendo providing Vr to the masses in a portable factor.
Imagine the possibilities with a portable and wireless VR. Nintendo Switch is said to have the ability to play full sized console games and Skyrim is one of those games. Portable VR Skyrim is a sure fire hit even for an old game.
This isn't the first time Nintendo has made a VR peripheral. Virtual Boy was designed to be a game changer as it was the firs of its kind. But Virutal Boy is now remembered as one of the biggest flops of any gaming peripheral. But if Nintendo Switch does VR right, then Nintedo has a winner on their hands.
