Another day, another character announced to make its return to Super Smash Bros. The latest is none other than the self-proclaimed ruler of Dream Land, King DeDeDe.
News came by way of an update to the official Smash Bros. website, showing the penguin with his trademark robes and giant mallet.
The character was first introduced in Kirby's Dream Land on the Game Boy in 1992. He's since appeared as the main antagonist in almost every Kirby game since, save for a select few. He appeared very briefly as a cameo character in the background of the first Smash Bros. game's Dreamland stage, and later as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee. He wouldn't appear as a playable character until the most recent Smash game on the Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
As you might expect from his size, Dedede could be a tough character in the proper hands, thanks to powerful throws and a lengthy reach. He also has a good recovery, a nice selection of quick but hard hitting attacks, and is one of the hardest characters in Brawl to K.O. It's unclear, but he's expected to play the same way in the next Smash game and sport the same moves.
With Dedede announced, the game's roster is now at 20 counting the Links and other returning brawlers like Peach, Captain Olimar, Luigi, Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Samus, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Bowser, Pit, Sonic, and more recently, Princess Zelda. The latest newcomers are Super Mario Galaxy's Rosalina and Luma, Mega Man, the WiiFit Trainer, and Animal Crossing's Villager.
We learned recently that the Wii U and 3DS versions of the games would feature different trophies so that each version would be closer to the games featured on its respective platform.
While the characters keep coming, we're still no closer to learning the game's release date. Not long before Christmas, the idea caught on that the game had a release window of this Spring. Unfortunately, this was incorrect, and Smash Director Masahiro Sakurai was quick to reject the alleged release date on Twitter. Apparently the erroneous information was the result of either a misquotation, or possible translation error. Whatever the case, players have only the ambiguous timeframe of "sometime" during 2014 in which they can expect Super Smash Bros. to arrive.
Super Smash Bros. is slated to hit both the Wii U and the handheld 3DS some time in 2014. Cross-play between the two systems will not be featured.
