Aleppo Evacuation Deal Falls Apart, Artillery Fire Continues

The ongoing strife in Aleppo takes another hit after the reported evacuation deal between Russia and Turkey falls apart. Most of the remaining civilian families, workers, medical workers and wounded were prepared for their awaited exodus from all the violence. But reports of sudden artillery fire from pro-government forces shattered their hopes and had them run for their safety.

These unfortunate turn of events have trapped these people inside a violent warzone. The war has been unraveling in the past six years as reported by the NYTimes. The details of the supposed evacuation agreement stipulate that the remaining fighters were to leave Allepo and head for the rebel-held territories up north, while the civilians were given the option to join them or transfer to government- controlled areas.

The conclusion would mean the total control of the area in Aleppo by the forces serving Bashar al-Assad. But it appears the artillery fire still persisted and has caused much grief to the population. Most of the remaining activists and civilians have posted videos of themselves saying their goodbyes and pleading for help.

Each side has reportedly blamed one another for the alleged mishandling of the Aleppo deal. UN commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad al-Hussein has expressed his concerns regarding the incident. He criticized the process of how the reported deal supposedly gave the population a sliver of hope, but just after a day it was "snatched away," which is "outrageously cruel." Mr. al-Hussein also criticized the Syrian government stating that they have "a clear responsibility to ensure its people are safe," but is "palpably failing" to take the chance and do so.

Reports have also claimed that civilians in rebel-held territories have protested against the repeated shelling. They have urged the leaders of these groups to instead help those people stuck in Aleppo. It remains to be seen how the UN and the world will take action against these supposed atrocities. However, it seems that the fighting and the violence will continue to terrorize the people stuck in the area.
