On Miiverse today Super Smash Bros. series director Masahiro Sakurai announced that not only will there be trophies in the 3DS and Wii U versions of the latest Super Smash Bros. game, but each version will have different trophies.
"Happy New Year!
Pic of the day. There will be trophies in the 3DS and Wii U games, and each version will boast different types and models. The 3DS trophies will be mainly from handhelds and the Wii U version will feature trophies from the home-console games."
The above screenshot is of a trophy of Saria, who is Link's friend in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which of course has its own 3DS version.
This seems to jive with what Nintendo has announced in the past, namely that the portable version of Super Smash Bros. will have stages based on handheld games, while the Wii U version will focus on home console games. Both titles will feature the same roster of characters (including the return of Zelda) but cross-play will not be possible. This is a bummer but they seem to be trying to differentiate the titles as much as possible. Each version will have its own graphical style and its own unique features.
By offering up two different sets of trophies (alongside the separate levels) Nintendo seems to be trying to get us all to purchase both versions. The Trophies in Super Smash Bros. are usually the most addictive part of the games, as you'll spend lots of time collecting the little 3D representations of famous characters and items from Nintendo games. The last installment in the series, Super Smash Bros Brawl, offered a staggering 544 trophies to find, mostly by playing through the various single-player modes.
So we can expect lots of replay value once again, either in single or multiplayer modes. One thing the two versions of the upcoming game will be able to do is trade customized characters between the two versions. It's a shame that that's all but it's not a surprise- the single game to feature cross-platform play so far between the Wii U and 3DS is Monster Hunter 3.
Neither version has a release date just yet but we'll let you know as soon as we do.
