While "Stardew Valley" has become known for not having the best controller support on PC, its recently released PS4 version seems to have the same ailment as well. However, the problem here is that the controller is pretty much the only option on console.
Developer Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone has described the controller support for the PC version as "less than ideal" and promised improvement for the console versions. Most of the game has been left unchanged, so PC and console players of the "Stardew Valley" should have roughly the same experience.
However, the PS4 does have some tweaks to make it a bit easier, but only just. Things like increasing cursor sensitivity and speed, making it slow down when it moves towards a clickable object, and so on were meant to make things easier, but it seems it'll take even more work to make "Stardew Valley" play better with a controller. Until then, the precision of keyboard and mouse is still seen as the superior option.
This is mostly due to the game mostly being played with a cursor, which means the mouse is the ideal implement for the game. But for those who wish to play with a controller, moving the cursor around can be quite a chore. It can even get as bad as inadvertently doing things you didn't mean to do like accidentally gifting items and planting or watering crops where you don't intend, all because "Stardew Valley" controller support isn't where it should be yet.
While it doesn't make the game completely unplayable, "Stardew Valley" controller support can really use some quality-of-life updates to make playing this otherwise addicting game a more seamless experience. Meanwhile, some players have noticed other minor faults in the PS4 version like saving taking a lot longer to finish and so on.
The PC version had recently received a major 1.1 patch that added more features, which are included in the PS4 version as well. Despite "Stardew Valley" controller support being slightly subpar, the PS4 version is recommended for those who want to play a Harvest Moon-style game from their couch.
