Apparently, "Pokemon GO" isn't this year's best game on iPhone, at least according to Apple. The iOs company announced the results of its annual Game of the Year awards for iPhone and iPad. Supercell's "Clash Royale" took home iPhone Game of the Year, ahead of "Reigns" from developer Nerial and publisher Devolver Digital.
"Clash Royale" Wins; "Pokémon GO" Didn't Even Make Apple's Top Ten
"Clash Royale" is a free-to-play strategy game that has elements of card games, tower defense games and PC MOBAs. The app has players face off against each other by dropping cards from their deck onto a battlefield. The cards then become units, equipped with various capabilities. While it's a free download, players can spend cash to improve their decks.
It's surprisingly good for a card game, a card game that beat the hell out of Niantic's "Pokemon GO." The location-based game did not even make it to the top ten list, but it did get recognized as this year's Breakout Hit, which is more fitting. After all, it's the only mobile game to outgross "Clash Royale" in iPhone.
"Clash Royale" And Apple's Best iPhone Games
Next to "Clash Royale" and "Reigns," "Ink" came in third, followed by "FIFA Mobile Football," "Klocki," and "Rodeo Stampede: Sky Zoo Safari." "Pktball" ranked seventh, followed by "Snakebird," "Twofold Inc" and "The Trial."
Apart from "Clash Royale," Apple also rounded up this year's most popular free apps, which included Snapchat, Messenger, WhatsApp and "Pokemon GO." iPad Game of the Year went to "Severed," while "Field Day" went home with Apple Watch Game of the Year. Another big winner is "Riptide GP," named Apple TV Game of the Year.
According to MacStories, last year's winners included "Lara Croft Go" for iPhone Game of the Year, while "Prune" won the iPad category. In 2014, "Threes "and "Monument Valley" were declared winners. For the complete list of 2016 winners, visit the App Store.
