Until Dawn releases exclusively for PS3: A complete guide to all that we know

Until Dawn is Sony and Supermassive Games’ upcoming movie-themed horror title that’s set for a release exclusively on the PlayStation 3. The game is inspired by classic American teen horror movies and expects to deliver gameplay centered around surviving a crazed serial killer.

As far as the story for the game goes, Until Dawn, unveiled for PlayStation 3 first at Gamescom 2012, follows a group of teenagers as they spend the night in a log cabin (you can imagine what happens next) on the anniversary of the death of one of their friends, and are unaware that they are being hunted by an insane serial killer.

The official description for the game is as eerie as it gets, with Supermassive Games writing: “On the anniversary of their friends' disappearance, a group of classmates visit the site of the mystery to bury their ghosts and get some closure. Little do they know, they'll end up burying each other instead...”

The company, looking to the deliver the game by the end of the current year, states that it has been working on the title for a while now by collaborating with “Hollywood writers and US TV talent” and “doing our best to bring the Teen Horror experience to PlayStation.”

“Inspired by classic movies in the genre, we expect that Until Dawn will draw you in with its characters, killer dialogue and shocking, twisted story,” it adds.

As expected from the style of the story and the gameplay mechanics involved, since it’s a Teen Horror, the game will play out in an isolated space where “the power's out and the phones don't work.” Players will get to play through the story as multiple characters, “sometimes with a friend and sometimes on your own” to find out what’s happening and who’s behind all these murders. The first-person perspective portions seen in the trailer are actually reminescent of the Condemned games.

Apparently, there’s no set ending to the story of the game and it will be up to the players on how they choose to play out the game, and so there will be an element of surprise involved on who survives and who’s fresh meat. What this means is that next time if you choose to play the game out differently, you will get an alternate ending with alternate set of survivors and dead people.

Supermassive Games’s managing director Pete Samuels was also recently available via an interview with Polygon where he assured everybody that the game “is very much still in development, going really well, and without any deliberations of possible cancellation that I’m aware of.”

“We’re very pleased with the way it’s going. I’m sure that there will be more news soon, but I couldn’t say exactly when,” he added, on the wake of fears that the company might have stopped the game’s development.

While we are yet to receive any concrete detail on how the gameplay for Until Dawn will pan out, it has been revealed that players will need to make use of the PS Move controller “in a totally natural way.”

The company adds that as far as the game’s concerned, the involvement of the PS Move controller will see it being used as a flashlight that will help players move around and see in the dark (Yes. Expect a LOT of darkness) or “when you want to use something the controller will intuitively map your actions in the real world to those of your character’s hand in the game world.”

Until Dawn, as mentioned before, will arrive exclusively for PlayStation 3 and is currently scheduled for a release this December. Check out the announce trailer below.
