"The Return of Doctor Mysterio," the Christmas special episode for the series "Doctor Who," was featured in a 30-second trailer Friday. Fans of the show will be excited to find out that Peter Capaldi's Doctor Who will be saving New York from not just any type of aliens, but the brain-swapping kind.
The TARDIS-travelling Time Lord will be visiting Manhattan this Christmas to team up with the superhero-vigilante, The Ghost (Justin Chatwin), and give the latter's journalist sweetheart (Charity Wakefield) a hand.
The episode which airs in the United States on Dec. 25 will be having quite a roster of characters appearing in it. For besides the two already mentioned above, a fan favorite will also be making a comeback in the series for this year's holiday special. Nardole (Matt Lucas) seems to be a regular holiday visitor on the "Doctor Who" series as he also made his presence felt in last year's "The Husbands of River Song" for Christmas 2015.
The hour-long Christmas episode will air on BBC America and BBC One in the U.S. (and on ABC in Australia a day later). It is set in New York, although the filming was done in the United Kingdom. It is also interesting to note that the American characters on it were played by Canadian and British actors.
The trailer, which was revealed on Twitter, features time traveler Doctor Who declaring "I'm back." A masked figure all dressed in black is also seen flying in the sky, evidently the Ghost. Working together, Doctor Who and the masked mystery man work to rid Manhattan of the alien threat.
The special episode was written by Steven Moffat and directed by Ed Bazalgette with Peter Bennett producing and Brian Minchin as the executive producer. Also starring in the special are Tomiwa Edun, Aleksandar Jovanovic, and Logan Huffman.
The trailer was posted on Twitter with: "Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's the trailer for The Return of Doctor Mysterio! #DoctorWho"
