‘Sherlock’ Season 4 Spoilers, Latest News & Updates: ‘Sherlock’ Returning On New Year’s Day, Darkest Season Yet Based On Arthur Conan Doyle’s ‘The Six Napoleons’

After a very long time of numerous and excited fans raving for more, "Sherlock" is finally returning and it looks like viewers are in for a dark and adventurous treat. Filming for season 4 has commenced and it has been announced on BBC's official Twitter page that "Sherlock" will be airing on New Year's Day, January 1, 2017.

Is 'Sherlock' Season 4 The Show's Last?

While fans are delighted that their favorite detective is back, they are also saddened by rumors that this upcoming season could be Sherlock's last one. In a recent interview, Benedict Cumberbatch commented in an interview with GQ that "Sherlock" Season 4 might be Sherlock's last and while he neither confirmed nor denied it, he suggests that Season 4 could indeed be the show's finale.

Cumberbatch added that they have already reached a point in the show wherein they have already achieved something complete and that would be difficult to follow through after "Sherlock" Season 4. He even said that it is already the end of an era and that, perhaps, this could be the "Doctor Strange" star's last run playing the iconic detective.

'Sherlock' Season 4 Spoilers: Moriarty Is Back

BBC recently teased fans with a "Sherlock" Season 4 trailer that shows a dark and mysterious adventure ahead. What is even more significant is that talks about Moriarty returning have been confirmed and although this would excite a lot of viewers, Sherlock himself might not feel the same way.

Ghosts would play a significant role in "Sherlock" Season 4 and this will have something directly to do with Moriarty's comeback. Showrunner Steven Moffat even revealed that this upcoming season of "Sherlock" would be a roller coaster ride of wild emotions but he assure fans that there will be the usual humour, reports Entertainment Weekly.

Fans suggest that the "Sherlock" Season 4 premiere's title, "The Six Thatchers," pays homage to Conan Doyle's short story, "The Six Napoleons," just as "The Lying Detective" is of "The Dying Detective." There have been no news yet as to who the Thatcher in the title is.

However, it is theorized that they will be dealing with a murder mystery that comes out of the vandalizing of tributes to former UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. "Sherlock" Season 4 will air on BBC/PBS.
