Google is eyeing to take advantage of the growing market for Ultra High Definition (UHD) videos being offered in mobile devices. DirecTV Now's attempt to capitalize on streaming TV shows on mobile devices has so far backfired.
Multiple users have reported a buggy DirecTV Android app that prevents subscribers to watch video content. With that said, Google has set its eyes on a new way to watch your favorite movies in the palm of your hands.
According to Express, the online giant has added 4K UHD movies to the Google Play Store, allowing smartphone/tab owners to watch movies in ultra high definition. So far Google has 125 available UHD movies for the launch of its Play Movies Store, but the rentals do not come cheap.
Google Latest News & Update: Play Movies Store Rental Starts At $7.99
Paying for an $8 rental for a UHD movie is not very economical, but for the premium quality of the movies, owners of smartphones that do not own a 4K TV might have to go for the 4K UHD option. According to Napier Lopez, a writer from thenextweb, some of the movies even go as high as $29.99 in rentals.
The only problem for Google is how consumers will respond to the hefty price tags these rentals have. A number of mobile users have already enjoyed Playstation Vue's streaming service that lets you watch up to 55 channels for basically the same $29.99 price tag. Most of these channels even have HD quality.
It's safe to say that enjoying extra quality might really need extra dollars; but the current pricing isn't that realistic to current market trends. Until now there are three other streaming devices that offer 4K UHD content, Sky, Netflix and BT.
