'Jack Reacher' Star Tom Cruise Not Saving The Day On 'The Mummy,' Says Director Alex Kurtzman; Wants 'Top Gun' Instead?

Film director for the reboot "The Mummy," Alex Kurtzman, described Tom Cruise's role in the film as something that is not usual. Unlike his previous hit movies, Tom Cruise will not be saving the day, but assured fans that Cruise's role is a tad challenging as he is in a movie with a monster, a character that is out of control.

Kurtzman told Entertainment Weekly that Tom Cruise played the character of Nick Morton, a person who knows no moral standards or principles. And during filming, the director spoke to Tom and told him, "It will be scarier if we can take away the fundamental knowledge that you are gonna solve the problem." When the teaser trailer for "The Mummy" was released, Tom Cruise died in a plane crash and was brought back to life.

Kurtzman explained without divulging much about the film that "there is an origin story happening on two different fonts." When Nick Morton, a military in the movie, woke up, he did not have inkling on what was happening, the film director added.

Sofia Boutella, who played Princess Ahmanet or the "mummy" in the film, is not absolutely evil, according to Kurtzman. Alex said that if viewers would listen to the dialogue in the trailer, "she will claim what she's been denied," suggesting that there is a bit of kindness in her.

Originally, the "mummy" was supposed to be a man, according to Alex Kurtzman, and they have had several drafts on the story elements. But the 43-year-old movie director said that having a man as a mummy would not say much of a difference and he will not "be able to deliver something that felt truly original." A voice has been nagging on his head to make the mummy a woman.

"The Mummy" is set for release on June 9, 2017 through Universal Pictures and it is the first installment of the Monster Universe.
